A lot of people might think that Disney makes most of its money through its movies.

But Disney's studio entertainment only makes up 17% of the company's overall sales.

1/ Here's some more detail on the studio entertainment portion of the business
2/ In fact, you can see that "media networks" is still the most profitable segment.
3/ Here are the exact margin profiles today
4/ This is how it breaks down in the "media network" segment.
5/ Most of that cable revenue is from affiliate fees, or money that cable distributors pay Disney for access to its content.
6/ The other piece is broadcasting where most of the money made is from selling advertising slots on ABC.
7/ And this is a great primer on how tv networks make money.

Just looking through some old S-1's.

This has quite a bit of survivorship bias, but I think it's fascinating.

All of these numbers are right before the companies IPO'd.

We'll start with Google...
1/ I think that's the definition of product-market fit.

More than 10x growth in 2 years. 😱
2/ And look at the margin profile.

The scalability is ridiculous. Just four years after the founding of the company, it already had 89% gross margins and higher than 35% EBIT margins.

For the last 6 years, Starbucks has, on average, opened more than 5 stores PER DAY! 😱

No wonder they are on EVERY street corner!

1/ The company has opened 11,258 stores in the past 6 years.

That's a little less than one-third of McDonald's total restaurant count.
2/ The company makes a vast majority of its revenue, 80%, from company-owned stores.

This is a different approach than the franchising approach of McDonald's, where company-owned restaurants made up 45% of sales.

McDonald's doesn't sell burgers, it sells franchises.

It's a real estate company, not a fast-food restaurant.

What is taqwa and what are some of its main effects in this world and in the Hereafter?
Islam teaches that we were created to attain perfection through worship, which is the organized buildout of taqwa (God-consciousness/piety). By worshipping God, we increase in taqwa and thus more consummately connect with Him, and as He is unlimited, we reach our potential.
What exactly is taqwa? In language, 'taqwa' means caution; thus, it refers to fear/consciousness of Him (obeying Him and not disobeying Him). Imam Ja'far al-Sādiq (a) defines having taqwa as: "God not losing you where He commanded you and not finding you where He restricted you."
