Three people convicted in the CRISPR baby case are

We all know who He Jiankui is. But who the heck are Zhang Renli (two years) and Qin Jinzhou (18 months)??

Turns out they are the embryologists. THREAD on why that matters.
So He submitted a paper to Nature (and later JAMA) detailing the editing of human embryos which lists ten authors, nearly all from the Southern University of Science and Technology.

So Qin Jinzhou is the first author listed on the draft manuscript and given his expertise, in embryology, you can infer he actually injected the CRISPR into the embryos.

Veritas Genetics which tried to make a business offering inexpensive whole genome sequencing to consumers, is going out of business in the U.S., looks like.

Had problems including a data breach and just a lack of demand from people to know their genes.
"Veritas in July said that it had sequenced 5,000 genomes, with a goal of sequencing more than 150,000 in 2021. The company has raised more than $50 million in venture funding, according to Crunchbase."

In 2017 we reported Veritas going to offer whole genome sequencing for Chinese kids, but planned offerings to that market -- predictions about baldness, musical talent -- were condemned by expert opinion here.

Scientists debate. Should He Jiankui's draft manuscripts be released in full?

In favor: Let everyone see it, understand it, learn more about it.

Against: Unethical human subjects research, must be repressed.
Howard Bauchner, the editor of JAMA, which reviewed but rejected the manuscript, told me this was the "central quandry."

“If someone thinks it’s scientifically valid but not ethical, does that mean the study will stay in the shadows?"

What we know about it? Well not much. 1/ They have edited CCR5 gene, which prevent HIV entry. Have they edited CCR5 to generate a ∆32 mutation? no idea. It looks they edited CCR5 in the pronuclear and check editing by sequencing 3-5 days later -> 16/22 edited and 11 implanted
Twins were born with one carrying an heterozygous allele and the second baby an homozygous allele and one carried mosaic alleles. Details? No off target found but I don't have any details on this too. Are the CCR5 protein level changed? Again very little details on this.

Once in orbit, the #Aeolus satellite will have a polar, sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 320 km, taking 90 minutes to complete one orbit around Earth and seven days to cover the globe.

#Aeolus will be operated by @esaoperations via the ground station in Kiruna, Sweden. Scientific data will be downlinked to Svalbard, Norway, and sent to Tromsø for processing. Further processing will be done by @ECMWF in the UK, and @ESA_EO in Italy.
