holy crapola, i don't know how i missed this phenomenal observability primer from @Mads_Hartmann the first time round, but i do not believe i have seen a better one. it is terse, curated and opinionated; even has some deep cuts that were new to me. 🏅 mads-hartmann.com/sre/2019/08/04…

Oh, this is such a good question that I can't believe how infrequently people ask it: what are the top three ops skills for software engineers? What must a SWE know to be "production-literate?"

(Here come my answers; do share yours!)
1) they are suitably wary but not terrified of the deploy process, e.g. what happens between when they commit a change and when it goes live?

They can re the deploy process without referring to the source. With the source, they can explain each step and why in detail.
... oops, got interrupted. ☺️ yes, #1 technical ops skill is knowing how code goes live, and being able to capably deploy and roll back one's changes (and debug and fix basic errors in the process)

Yes, yes. Sorry. I did not mean "screw TDD, find every bug in production and ONLY production". That would be too obviously ridiculous, or so I thought ☺️ but many did read it that way.

It is cheap and easy to find known unknowns, so we should check for them CONSTANTLY.
So much of running production systems comes down to your skill at turning unknown-unknowns into known-unknowns with some consistency.
Every unknown-unknown is an engineering problem. It requires creativity, novel thinking, and an open-ended amount of time to resolve.

Every known-unknown is a support problem. A pattern matching problem, an index lookup problem.

After the end of the war, there’s a lot of triage to do on Earth. Governments fell, infrastructures crumbled, and the human population was decimated by the Galra. There’s a lot of work to be done, but one of the top priorities is reuniting families.
After all, it’s hard to convince people to help get power and water utilities working when they’re focused on finding which, if any, surviving relatives they might have. People are invited to register as survivors, and families start to come together as pieces fall into place.
