1. As @brhodes just made clear on @MSNBC, Trump’s incessant complaints that NATO countries “aren’t paying enough to NATO” is a profound misunderstanding by Trump. There is a benchmark of 2%: NATO countries have pledged to devote 2% of their GDP to THEIR OWN military forces.
2. This is NOT a payment to some (non-existent) NATO fund. So Trump complaining that those countries are “not paying their fair share” is an incorrect (and intentionally misleading) construct. Here’s an analogy: if Walmart pledged to reduce its prices by 10% but only ended up ...
3. reducing its prices by 5%, Trump would run around complaining, “Walmart is not paying me my 5%!” Ummm . . . no.
