We calculated a Racism Score for all 158 police agencies in our analysis, evaluating how agencies compare in:

1. drug possession arrest disparities (indicating biased arrest practices)
2. deadly force disparities per arrest

LA had among the worst scores: policescorecard.org/about
Our methodology is explained in detail here: github.com/campaignzero/c…
The score will evolve over time as more data becomes available and is integrated into the analysis, especially as the data from AB 953 begins to be more widely reported in CA, including data on racial profiling in stops and searches.

Let’s talk about California’s new police deadly force law, which is supposed to go into effect next month. This law was designed to stop the police from killing people - but there’s a secret behind-the-scenes strategy that could stop it from doing anything at all. A thread.(1/x)
The law is called AB 392 or “The Act to Save Lives.” It was written to change California’s deadly force standard from allowing police to shoot people when “reasonable” to now restrict it to only happen when “necessary” after ALL AVAILABLE ALTERNATIVES have been EXHAUSTED. But...
Law enforcement groups lobbied heavily to remove the definition of “necessary.” So “necessary” will be defined by whoever writes each police department’s use of force policy (at least until courts rule on this but we don’t know if or when that’ll even happen or what they’ll say).

We just published evaluations of all 58 California Sheriff’s Depts + 100 largest CA Police Depts. Data on police violence, arrests, accountability, police budgets, ICE cooperation, jails and more. The data evaluation framework to hold police accountable: policescorecard.org
We’ve now obtained 3 full years of data (2016-18), tracking changes over time. Our methodology identifies a set of police depts that have consistently had worse outcomes than the state average - places like Bakersfield, Long Beach, Riverside, Palm Springs, Beverly Hills.
And we’re conducting deeper dive analyses of some of the largest/most problematic agencies, uncovering more evidence showing a pattern/practice of discriminatory policing:

A system where people of color - who are half of all Democratic voters - have to donate hard-earned money to make sure there’s a candidate that represents them on the stage while an endless parade of white guys just buy their way into the debates is basically a racist tax.
It’s some trickle-down racist economics.
The six people who support Bloomberg and the nine people who support Steyer just turn on the TV and see their plutocratic views represented. They don’t have to shell out $$ every time a debate comes up to see *somebody* say something about the fact that the police are killing us.

The groups cover a range of extremist ideologies. Some present themselves publicly as being dedicated to benign historical discussion of the Confederacy, but are replete with racism inside.
Some trade in anti-Semitic and anti-immigrant memes. Some are openly Islamophobic. And almost 150 of the officers we found are involved with violent anti-government groups such as the Oath Keepers and Three Percenters.

#WhiteFragility preserves 'order' whether or not intended.
Important to remember.
#WhitePrivilege, #InstitutionalRacism manifests sometimes in the form of blaming the blacks. It becomes 'code word bonding' and wittingly or unwittingly goes to preserve the status quo. Knowingly or otherwise, it is #WhiteFragility.
