Johnson does not want to be scrutinised in an election, does not want to be scrutinised in government as we've already seen. Whether cowardice, arrogance, or something else, this has to be worrying.
Since Labour is obviously also in a mess in this election, I suspect the best thing everyone can do in this election is to vote for the local candidate best able to provide proper scrutiny - bearing in mind that both Labour and Conservatives have many good candidates.
Not forgetting of course now independent candidates. The likes of Dominic Grieve, David Gauke and Frank Field have at different times demonstrated a stubborn desire to hold the executive to account, and we need more of this in the next Parliament - where we face big decisions.
