My long-ish thoughts on the challenges ahead in UK-EU relations - the UK will clearly leave the EU in January, but finding a new normal relationship will take time and is about more than negotiating a trade deal... ecipe.org/blog/uk-electi…
Summary thoughts - this isn't just about the UK. The EU has not really thought deeply about a future relationship it hoped wouldn't have to be negotiated
The government will have a honeymoon period - but it won't be long before some serious choices have to be made
Hard to draw any conclusions as yet as to whether no trade deal at the end of 2020 is possible
Business too faces challenges in UK-EU negotiations, not least of being able to get into the detail of what they want, especially with a government that hasn't in the past been overly keen to hear from them...
And for the EU work to do - the future relationship with the UK really doesn't fit into any existing model, as is already becoming apparent. So what are the priorities for the EU?
Finally, the big tension between EU and US over UK regulatory alignment. Both want us to follow their rules, the US is politically attractive for Brexiteers but likely offers little in new market access, the EU offers more but didn't we just leave? Choices, choices... /end
