From my vantage point, only folks who have been working & studying in the traditions of prison & police abolition fully grasp the widespread implications of this ongoing struggle. This is not a broken system folks. It is a system that is working as intended.
It has been proven time and time again that the NYPD structurally incentivizes oppression. And New York keeps adding more police and prisons to solve its problems. Everyone should be following this story and @nonewnypd, @nonewjails_nyc, @nonewjailsdc
@nonewnypd @nonewjails_nyc @nonewjailsdc On this note I wish I was at #MUMI . Shoutout to everyone there.
@nonewnypd @nonewjails_nyc @nonewjailsdc Centrist liberals have a totally mythological & ahistorical understanding of the institutions of the police & prisons. They believe that modern police depts were put here to protect the masses of people & that police prevent crime. Both of those ideas are false & easily debunked.
@nonewnypd @nonewjails_nyc @nonewjailsdc Black feminists working police & prison abolition traditions have a far more sophisticated & historically supported understanding of the functions, limitations, & reality of police in the modern world. Anyone seeking understanding should at least become literate w/ those analyses
@nonewnypd @nonewjails_nyc @nonewjailsdc Scholarship in critical and radical criminology also have a clearer understanding of what police are and why reform efforts have continued tomake police more powerful and more oppressive since the start of the London Metro police in 1829.
@nonewnypd @nonewjails_nyc @nonewjailsdc It is atrocious reasoning to pose the intentions of "good" policemen against this larger historical reality the structural incentives in the job. The NYPD situation illustrates what good police officers are up against. They are up against the very purpose of their own profession.
