Mr. Toby got hit by a car yesterday.

He took the full impact on his left side and broke the bumper. It looked like the end for him, but he has decided to live forever.
Dr. Geisman picked up late and told us to check Mr. Toby's gums. Discoloration means internal bleeding.

My vet deals with a lot of service dogs. He taught me how to bandage a dog once. That ended up saving Toby's life once when he went through a window to say hi to a neighbor.
Despite being hit by a car, Mr. Toby seemed fine.

Thanks to my family, I made it to Festus for a campaign talk about workplace protections before getting back home and doing one of Mr. Toby's favorite things: Installing a working printer. He really enjoys peeing on them.
I was supposed to be on the way to Kansas City this morning, but my campaign manager - who is first and foremost a friend - postponed the trip until at least after I talk to the vet this morning.
One of the questions I got asked last night is how are you doing this differently. How are you going to win in Missouri?

Mr. Toby is the answer. And I don't mean just dog videos, although, yes, plenty of those.
I have a home in St. Louis City off a busy street with a stubborn dog who thinks he is the guardian of the neighborhood.

My family is all right here.

My house is a mess, my paint is peeling, my retaining wall needs more than a lot of work.
I don't work at some big firm. I'm incredibly blessed to be able to put my life on hold to run for statewide office, but this isn't running the easy way. It's the "make-it-work" way.

In that environment, when things go bad, like they did last night, we have each others' backs.
What we're building is more than a campaign. It's a community.

Where we understand that everyone has something broken.

Where every person just wants things to work out.

Where we have each others' backs.
And where you have to be passionate enough to shrug off a big hit on the side, skid along the pavement, and keep on going.

That's why we have the biggest grassroots campaign for the Attorney General's Office ever. That's why people care.
In many ways, this is Mr. Toby's campaign, and I'm happy that he gets to see another day of it.
