Yovanovich, addressing the students at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service: “To those of you who haven’t *yet* decided to go to work for the American people, I hope tonight I can convince you.”

Even after all of that, she’s encouraging young people to become diplomats.

At the award ceremony for Marie Yovanovich, the dean of the Georgetown School of Foreign Service says, “We are the original globalists. We embrace the term proudly.”
Of Yovanovich he says, “This is what intellectual courage looks like. This is what a moral compass looks like.”
He and another speaker refer to “refugees from the foreign service.” Constant bird-flipping to the White House at this event—in the most diplomatic language possible, naturally.

Hello from the DC DMV, where, after presenting my documents—passport, birth certificate, Social Security card, copy of my parents’ naturalization certificate—officials have refused to issue me an ID under the new regulations of the Real ID act. 1/
I’m an educated person who has the privilege of being able to take time off work to spend hours dealing with this and who has all my documents. If I’m having this much trouble, then happens to people who can’t take off work, don’t have the originals of all their documents? 2/
But then again, that’s obviously the point. /end

1/ I appreciate the effort here, but it only nips at the margins, in a way that empowers the very sickos that are perpetrating this - and those who are inciting them.

Here's why:

(1) This introspection over who is behind the bulk of anti-Semitic hate crimes & terrorism...
2/ ... is almost a total misnomer, because while white nationalists etc are the perps of many of the bigger domestic attacks, far & away the #1 most-frequent perps are a) Radical Islamists and b) Radical leftists.

There is no indication of that in this discussion.
3/

(2) White nationalists etc could not show up on any college or high school campus and vomit up their anti-Semitic hate & incitement without a massive, morally-confident push-back, news coverage, etc.

Yet every day across America & W. Europe, radical Islamists & leftists...

In speech to the Republican Jewish Coalition, stereotypes Jews. “You’re not going to support me because I don’t want your money,” he told the Jewish audience. He also says, “Is there anyone in this room who doesn’t negotiate deals? Probably more than any room I’ve ever spoken.”

We often like to pretend that it is totalitarian governments that create the prejudices that end up killing millions - that they cast a strange, dark spell over the population. This couldn’t be further from the truth. They only ever work with what is already there. /1
I’ve written quite a bit about the roots of antisemitism in Germany - it stretches back almost a millennia. However, the post-war Weimar Republic in Germany provides a clear picture of a society sleepwalking towards domination due to the hatreds that festered within. /2
Despite the fact almost 100,000 Jews served Germany in the First World War, much of the blame for the country’s defeat was placed on the Jewish people. This stemmed from a wellspring of virulent anti semitism had emerged across Europe in the last decades of the 19th century. /3

Many have seen @SteveKingIA's viral meltdown.

King continued, made the rounds of local TV, calling comparisons with the #TreeOfLife shooter "insane, denying @washingtonpost reporting about collaborating with anti semitic websites, and defending the anti-Semitic FPO.

As the more complex aspects of the story break into TV especially, the mounting, well-documented evidence is presented as one side, and King's lies, avoidance, and anger is the other, with little clarity or context for audiences who haven't been reading the @washingtonpost.
I understand the limitations of TV, and I think most journalists are doing a great job with a very crowded election season and a lot of news to cover.

But this story is bigger than the election and it's important that @SteveKingIA's lies are not propagated unchallenged.
