Global hurricane activity

2010s:
826 global tropical storms
445 became hurricane strength
249 majors (Cat 3+)

2000s:
855 global tropical storms
450 became hurricane strength
248 majors (Cat 3+)

1990s:
256 majors (Cat 3+)

Across the Earth, during the past 30 or 40-years, there is no significant trend in number of global hurricanes (or those that become majors Cat 3+)

After the hurricane seasons of 2004-05, I started my graduate research which included updating this chart now on 15-years.

Let's go back 50-years -- why not?

There is no significant trend in the number of global tropical storms and/or hurricanes since 1970.

There is little evidence to suggest that will change during the 2020s*

*This is the current consensus among people that study this.

2019 global tropical cyclones:

87 tropical storms including:
48 hurricane strength
31 major strength (Cat 3+)

4 Category 5's with Hurricane Dorian (160-knots) strongest

*Preliminary as final intensity analysis will occur in next 6-months
