A YangBanger just texted me.

His "persuasive pitch" was that automation will make 1 in 3 jobs obsolete by 2030.

This is utter horse sh*t.

I'll give you one example why, and you can extrapolate that out to other scenarios.

Here goes:
The jobs that exist now represent the most systematized and frictionless available.

INFINITE other job possibilities exist, but transactional friction + a lack of systems to support them make them appear to be non-viable relative to the jobs we "see" now.
Here's an example:

You own a property. It's got scads of problems that need repairs/fixing. Your landscaping is a damn mess.

Right now, you don't wanna hire some rando to do this stuff for a million reasons—trust, consistency, appearance of a "real business," etc.

This new "dark mode" design trend is quite literally the worst trend of the last 18 years.

Light text on dark backgrounds highlighted the early web as coder types latched onto that aesthetic.

But we quickly learned that a high contrast environment puts major strain on the eyes.
As a result, we saw a major pendulum swing toward the more natural black-on-white palette that dominates in digital environments.

(As a rule, you want the object of interest to be effortless to focus on. B on W achieves this, W on B achieves the opposite.)
But this time, Apple is leading the charge (while somewhat ironically revealing how the company has indeed lost its way with design).

And the copycatters have been busy, much to the detriment of our retinas.

Paying for web design is *almost certainly* a huge mistake.

Here's the approach you should take instead...

A very wise THREAD based on 14 years of experience with overbuilt, broken, and downright expensive websites:
WHAT YOU WANT:

A totally custom look that fits you or your business.

You're cool. You're interesting. You're special!

You need a design that reflects these obvious truths.

Also, you don't want to look like everyone else—that's super boring!
THE PROBLEM:

You have a TON of idiosyncratic needs/wants.

You may not feel this way now—

"I just need this little thing...and that little thing...and this other thing. It's pretty simple, really!"

Every one of those molehills is, in fact, a mountain.

Summers in Detroit are too fucking hot, Hank thinks, on a particularly miserable, humid July night. He remembers them being hot and miserable when he was a kid, especially that summer the a/c broke and his parents couldn't afford to fix it for a month. He'd felt like he was
melting every night as he tried to sleep, but he knows it's even hotter now. Just a bit warmer, every year.
Still, Sumo needs to go out; he does better with a real walk at night, not just a snuffle around the yard.
Hank does too, he's realized.
So: as the summer progresses,
Hank takes him for walks later and later until he's clipping on his leash no earlier than 9:30, when the sun's at least mostly down. It's pitch black by the time he's far from home, but Hank finds that he likes being out that late. Sometimes the fireflies are still out then, too.

Many apps have surprisingly poor UX on 1st use.

"Would you like to donate?" -> Not before trying the app!

"Would you prefer layout X or Y?" -> How should I know before seeing the app?

"Please fill out this form + connect 3 data sources" -> How do I even know if this is useful?
A user's first experience should be delightful, otherwise they're likely to churn forever. Instead, a lot of first experiences are confusing or downright frustrating. 🙄
Another ex:
- I visit a news site for the first time.
- I'm shown a pop-up that covers the content I hoped to read and tells me I must disable my ad blocker to see anything.
- Simulatenously, I get a Chrome pop-up asking if I want to opt-in for notifications from the site. LOL.

Let me try to explain how out of the ordinary this is.

You can quickly find the ad buys that media companies took in during the 2016 election cycle using the filter provided at the site.

Here's the 1 with "Washington Post" entered as the recipient, with the highest $ #'s first and then in descending order.

All 5 are also united by the magnitude of their destructiveness, both in the past, in the lingering present and in the future.
