So many people so certain of the future UK-EU relationship model, and in different directions. Probably a good time to point out that trade agreements and relations are big messy things and it is quite conceivable over time we align in some areas and are distant in others
Also, that trade relationships and agreements are so complex that nobody is an expert on the entire contents (see UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement for a taster of this) and their implications for day to day trade.
In the last 24 hours I've looked at EU-Canada (CETA) and EU-Georgia text and learned something new from them even though I've looked at the first in particular many times. And that's just the text, the operations on the ground can be another matter...

The word "alignment" is being used here without being defined. Will we follow some of the same rules as the EU? Yes, inevitably. Will we have our own rules in some areas? Also yes. In which areas and what that means for trade - to be negotiated.
There's going to be a lot of this sort of language to come - alignment, equivalence, mutual recognition, regulatory coherence, regulatory cooperation - in all UK trade deals, not just with the EU. So we best define our terms.

And key questions are what are we prepared to bind by treaty (an FTA is a treaty) with who (we've already signed up for some "alignment" with the EU in the Withdrawal Agreement) in return for what, and what rules of other countries we might follow anyway.

Interesting piece. Johnson in the strand of Brexiteers who see Brussels as a regulator, Brexit as freedom from regulation? He then could be genuine when he says no to either EU or US food standards, problem is we live in a regulated world, and all trade is subject to regulation
The rise of the regulated economy is little studied and therefore not terribly well understood, for example those who think this is just an EU phenomenon could be shocked by the level of US regulation, which is frequently far more onerous than that in the EU.
There is strong domestic demand for regulation, but often resistance to meaningful regulatory cooperation between countries. That can only mean trade barriers. Brexit as case study as to what happens next.

Might work for a while. But those complicated trade deals break down into an awful lot of issues that people do care about, and the experience from around the world is that you can't keep them hidden from sight.
Also - the EU, US and other trade partners have domestic processes that mean they will be talking in public about trade deals with the UK, and the impact for their business. And this interweb will quickly transmit any interesting messages...
Worth remembering also that as things currently stand customs checks on trade between Britain and Northern Ireland start on January 1 2021. As they will for Britain to EU trade. These are going to be hard to hide.

One of the perverse realities of American politics since the Southern Strategy is how black voters, unions and groups like Planned Parenthood keep getting lumped into “the Establishment” or “the system” by certain parts of the left. /1
The Southern Strategy moved a lot of white people, and especially white men, into the GOP. A direct result of all that white flight (which took decades) is that the Democratic Party, as an establishment, is disproportionately black- and woman-powered. Never more so than now. /2
And that influence is probably at its greatest and most visible in the primaries, when the base gets to vote amongst themselves.

Meaning, in the primaries, reliable Democratic *voters* are a huge part of the Democratic “establishment”. /3

Good time to point out that medical students who wear Blackface and KKK robes in school become doctors who give substandard care to Black people.
The Black maternal death rate isn't a coincidence. Our health care is racists because we have racist people as medical practitioners. pbs.org/newshour/show/…
Medical school should be a time when a student's preparing for a career to save lives, give good care.

But if the foundation of one's medical career is imbued with racist 'jokes' ...I can only imagine how they treat patients of color as a practitioner.
