I hope this govt realize that nationwide NRC is NOT an option. You can't ask entire nation to queue up to prove citizenship. Unimaginable harassment apart, There is NOTHING more humiliating than to be asked to prove citizenship in your own country.

You must have heard many stories of harassment and even suicide because of NRC. Let me tell you how people felt humiliated in the NRC exercise in Assam

After the final Draft of NRC was published, 40 lacs excluded people were asked to submit their biometric details

I got a call from a 77 years old Bengali Hindu Retd Mathematics professor. (He spoke polished English, later when I met him I got to know he is a voracious reader.)

He called me in choked voice and asked if I could help him as he don't want to submit his biometrics.

I requestd him 2 submit his biometrics as SC allowed 2 collect. He broke down saying "I am feeling humiliated,this is hurting my dignity"

I apologized for not being able to help& pleaded to submit his biometrics. He dropped the call by repeatedly saying "I am feeling humiliated"

I called him after Final List of NRC was published. He told me his name has been included in the NRC but his wife & daughter-in-law have been excluded. His wife graduated before 1971 but lost her certificate.

Daughter-in-law is from Kolkata, she submitted her passport, her father worked in pvt sector, had no pre-1971 docs admissible in NRC, her name was excluded. The Retd Professor broke down again. He was angry because of the ordeal he had to go through at this age.

19 lakhs people have been excluded from NRC. I have seen many breaking down like the retd Professor. I know it's futile to hope anything constructive from this govt, BUT nationwide NRC will be catastrophic. Save this tweet.

I repeat, there is NOTHING more humiliating than to prove your citizenship in your own country. RIGHT TO LIVE WITH DIGNITY is an inherent right. It is a fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.

NRC will strip this very inherent right to live with dignity

The retd Professor had to go through this humiliation bcoz he is a BengaliHindu. BengaliMuslims went through similar humiliation. Bcoz they were obvious "suspect". The fact that the 77 years old Professor was born in India didn't protect him from several rounds of verification

CAA will protect Professor's wife and daughter-in-law. I am genuinely happy for them. They don't deserve to go through the humiliation of proving citizenship in their own country.

But CAA will filter everyone except one community. During NRC the Local Register can doubt anyone's citizenship. Local Register will have discretionary power which can be used in arbitrary manner.

In case citizenship is doubted, CAA will of course protect non Muslims, but not before verification and hearing. If authorities want they can harass you. If notice is issued by NRC authorities you will have to appear before them and prove your citizenship.

Any person can file an objection against you acc to Rule 4 Sub Rule 6 of THE CITIZENSHIP
(REGISTRATION OF CITIZENS AND ISSUE OF
NATIONAL IDENTITY CARDS)
RULES, 2003. If authorities issues notice, you will have to appear for verification.

In Assam objections were filed against Assamese Hindus too. They had to appear before NRC authorities.

This will lead to multiple hearings, unimaginable harassment and humiliation. NO ONE will be spared.

If there is one battle worth fighting for this generation, it's against the nationwide NRC.This battle is NOT for Muslims alone. This battle is for every Indian, to live a life with DIGNITY

If India protest peacefully like Gandhiji did against British Empire, Nothing is impossible.

ONLY Peaceful protest can force this arrogant govt to bow down before WE THE PEOPLE OF INDIA
