What are the right metrics for writers and readers?

Currently publishers measure themselves by pageviews, ad revenue, and impact.

But perhaps the right metrics are around learning and earning. Does a piece help a reader build knowledge or create wealth?

For example, Lambda School can quantify the impact of their content. They increased people's human capital (learning) and that increased their actual capital (earning).

Tricky part is attribution at the individual page level.
Many writers these days are like boxing promoters. They get two people to fight and make money from the spectacle.

The fighters both lose wealth, but the publication makes money. It's negative sum at the system level.
The alternative is content that assists in wealth creation. The entire West Coast media ecosystem building out now is implicitly focused on this.

It's all about tech, building your business, improving yourself. DIY Youtube videos also a part of this.
