The announcement of the ICC prosecutor is Netanyahu's true legacy. He brought us here, and deserves full credit.
True. He did not invent occupation, or settlements, or the settler regime that enforces occupation. That began the day after the war in 1967.
However, with one exception, every Israeli Prime Minister since Rabin has recognized the exstence of occupation and its perils to Israel
They did so halfheartedly while perpetuating that occupation. But some acted in good faith to end it, however inadequately. Not Netanyahu
For the past decade, Netanyahu has willfully, systematically placed all of the powers of government in service of making the end of occupation impossible. He denied and denies its very existence. He double down on its most toxic manifestations.
The maestro of occupation.
Netanyahu not only created a critical mass of settlements making the creation of an occupation-ending border virtually impossible. He upgraded and perfected a settler regime. Erasing the Green Line, he perpetuated, celebrated occupation.
With no small measure of success, Netanyahu has targeted all those in Israeli society who challenge occupation, branding them as traitors. Internationally, he has actively branded criticism of Israel and his policies as anti-Semitic - all in the service of occupation denial.
But for those who believe that Netanyahu's departure from office will necessarily change things - think again.
Irony is on steroid this week.
Netanyahu's rival, Gideon Sa'ar, elected to launch his campaign at Khan al Ahmar, E-1 and Givat Hamatos.
So during the week that brought Israel to the doorstep of the Int'l Criminal Court, his heir apparent, Gideon Sa'ar condemned Netanyahu for not destroying Khan al Ahmar and not building E-1 and Givat Hamatos, the former viewed a a war crime, the latter doomsday settlements.
So Mr. Prime Minister, your Premiership is indeed in grave jeopardy but fear not: your legacy remains intact, and you have a worthy successor.
So this is only a beginning.
Israel will end occupation, or it will be the end of us.
