More than 200 people were arrested and 600 injured during clashes between protesters and police officers from various forces.

The @sirecovi report is the result of interviews with 22 of the people who were remanded in custody.

Spain's Foreign Ministry has been sending a 70-page dossier about Catalonia to journalists.

It's ideologically-charged and somewhat incoherent.

But it also appears to violate the presumption of innocence of imprisoned Catalan representatives, which is very serious.

The document, falling perfectly in line with the prosecution, declares that the statement "the independence movement is peaceful" is "fake".

It goes on to suggest that pro-independence protests held in September 2017 (in which nobody was injured) were actually a "seige".
The word "tumultuous" is rarely used in Spanish.

But in a blatant reference to the crime of "sedition" (a "tumultuous uprising" in the Penal Code), the Spanish-language version of the dossier repeatedly uses "tumltuous" to describe events.

It is meant to suggest criminal guilt.

So we've got a general election in #Spain today. Socialist PM Pedro Sánchez is the frontrunner, although it's not certain that he will be able to put up a ruling majority. Here's a thread with a few thoughts on #28A:

What's new?

a) The Socialists are set to win, a first since 2008
b) Five national parties will get over 10% of the vote
c) The far-right will enter parliament, a first since 1982
d) The conservative PP faces an assault on the right not seen since the UCD collapsed in the 80s

2/
The campaign has been heavily polarized between left and right.

The right (PP + Ciudadanos + Vox) has focused on #Catalonia, hammering Sánchez's credibility and accusing him of being ready to cut the country into pieces for the sake of remaining in office.

Spain will hold its next general election on April 28th, its third since December 2015. This follows the rejection of the PSOE government’s 2019 budget at the hands of Catalan nationalist parties in mid-Feb. 2
The campaign will run from April 12th-26th. Polls will be blacked out for the five days prior to the vote, beginning on April 23rd. Expect plenty of thinly disguised polling data on the “Andorran fruit market” or some such to circulate online, though. 3

With the trial of pro-independence Catalan politicians underway, a serious thread on why I think much of the prosecution case against them is bullshit, to use the appropriate technical term.
Given that the accused are facing sentences of up to 25 years based on this accusation, this is not a debate about trivial issues. Now it’s difficult to claim that an accusation is unfounded without doing some research, so I’ve read the prosecution case.
This thread focuses above all on the issue of violence which is key to the accusation sustaining rebellion charges and demanding such high prison sentences for the accused. A key issue because demonstrating the violent uprising happened is needed to sustain rebellion charges
