/ I have other personal resolutions but my big ecological resolution is to get solar panels and get the house and car completely electric. Starting this thread to bring people along the decisions and solicit advice along the way.
/ last year my resolution was to turn tiny backyard into bird/critter habitat, cut way back on plastic, and get to 100% commuting by walking or mass transit. Did pretty well on all those so this is next.
/ Here are the basics in issue of full disclosure. First, I have the money to consider buying a system. I mean, I’ll have to get a HELOC, but it’s doable. For many who are considering, leasing panels is the only option. Another good option in SF is to buy only renewable power...
/ I do that now, via @CleanPowerSF. You can also do via PG&E. And renters can also do this! It spurs more investment in renewables.
/ But I want to do more and feel it’s incumbent upon those of us who can swing it to go solar, which helps spur investment/lower prices and reduce load on grids/fire risks etc.
/ ok, so I live in a 2-unit Victorian. Which means three electric systems. Mine/theirs/common. If I can persuade my neighbor to also go solar, I would think we’d each get somewhat of a break, one installation job, etc. So in a few days, as I start the HELOC, I’ll also broach.
/ we also both have gas-fires tank storage water heaters, and gas fired forced air furnaces. I’ll definitely be going electric, barring any unforeseen issues. My W/D is already electric. So if all this works out, only the stove would be on gas. It’s pretty new so...idk.
/ aside from climate change, another reason to get rid of as many gas lines as possible is a) earthquakes b) carbon monoxide. If you’re getting a new build, eliminate gas! Berkeley and San Jose are banning it from new homes.
/two wrinkles may effect some of my choices. First a few years ago me/old neighbors got new roof. A single surface PVC roof (completely endorse, cut heating costs in half). That company also does solar and measured where panels should go without hurting roof....
/ so it may be that is the best company to go with. (Old neighbors were moving and didn’t want to invest in solar).
/ another issue is the car. Right now we have a Mini Cooper countryman plug-in hybrid, which barely fits in our tiny and difficult to navigate garage. I’m interested in exploring a Tesla powerwall/car situation, but fitting any car is a consideration....
/ also right now we plug into common power and it’s fine, but depending on neighbors and the crazy rules of electric panels in SF, some choices could be foreclosed on.
/ and @Hyper_lexic points out another evil wrinkle, which is that PG&E is trying to limit the amount of solar individuals can bring online, yet another reason that company needs a complete overhaul @GavinNewsom
/ so to get around this planet killing policy of PG&E maybe I can go electric furnance and water heater first or I’ll have to wait for EV car (Nov). Or maybe a powerwall helps this problem? Anybody know? @eldescanso?
/ also a really basic thing I confess I do not know is if a powerwall only interfaces with a @Tesla car or if any smaller EV will do
/ fun fact, during the wildfires PG&E surveyed me about my feelings about...them switching all customers to time of use, which I believe they are doing
/ also important caveat: Our apartment/building has no AC (common in SF). And we are pretty low-energy usage. But this may make the PG&E sign-off conundrum more sticky.
