On Acemoglu thesis : Banerjee predictably professes his dislike for caste

But refuses to explain why Pak / B'desh are not merely poorer than India but ALSO more prone to ethnic violence!

It is so fashionable to vilify caste day in and out

But hey...India coheres as a nation. Pakistan does not!

India has seen growing minority populations. Pak / Bdesh's minorities shrink by the year

India seldom sees inter-caste warfare. Pakistan is habituated to tribal warfare
Why is there so much spotlight on caste, despite India shining through as an incredibly stable subcontinent?

I really would like to know that...
So much of western commentary on caste appears to be data-free and driven by prejudice

There can be N valid reasons to critique caste. But it's problematic when you start off with the assumption it is evil and force-fit things to that belief

The Acemoglu thesis is just that

Religious people tend to focus on ethical practices that are independent of Golden rule

E.g. Lifetime monogamy, spartan diet, teetotalling

Atheistic "Modernists" focus on Golden-rule anchored morality

E.g. Adhere to contracts, abide by traffic lights, Politeness, Punctuality
Given that the Golden rule is played up so much in Christianity (even finds mention in the Bible), one can argue that this 'consequentialist' approach to ethics originates with Christianity

In other older cultures, ethics has a deontological and hence subjective basis
Golden rule is essentially consequentialist

And in its modern form it is not even "do unto others as you'd have others do unto you"

But the less ambitious -

"Do not do unto others which you wouldn't like others to do to you"

Conservative narrative on CAA, NRC should focus on

-On why sharp changes in religious demography are a problem
-On downsides of illegal immigration
-On why persecuted Hindu groups are "exceptional"

Yet articulation on these issues is weak

Aftertaste is one of authoritarianism
As the messaging is not very clear, it is like preaching to the choir

The fence-sitters don't seem all that convinced that these moves were worth the hassle

The opposition's narrative on heavy-handedness, lack of a consensual approach on the other hand is striking a chord
Even if you hear the senior leaders on this issue (Modi, Shah), the talking points seem to be -

1. Hey this doesn't affect Indian muslims
2. Hey this is unfinished business of partition (followed by old soundbytes of how Nehruji, Bapuji felt about giving "aashray" to Pak-Hindus

The 2nd volume of @Ram_Guha's biography of Gandhi is a fine work spanning 1000 pages

But it's amazing Guha almost entirely sidesteps the Moplah Rebellion in his work (v brief mention in pages 149, 173)

One of Gandhi's greatest failures totally ignored in a massive biography!
@Ram_Guha The Moplah rebellion was directly a consequence of Mahatma's Khilafat movement

The number of civilian casualties is estimated to be at least 10K, and maybe as high as 20K

Guha doesn't even mention this! All he cites is the 2K casualties on the Moplah side!
@Ram_Guha This is a bit like authoring a multi-volume work on Churchill, and mentioning the "Dardanelles campaign" (Churchill's greatest failure) very briefly in a couple of pages!

#b 'Teknik menjawab' is not a series of rituals that you carry out to secure an A in the exam. You don't get guaranteed an A just through superficial actions like highlighting keywords or drawing meniscus or inserting isi tersirat.
The problem is students and teachers treat teknik menjawab as some sort of pseudo magical ritualistic gestures that will bring a certain outcome. Draw a pentagram, slaughter a chicken, and your wish will be granted.
Some remote Pacific Islanders in 1940s came in contact with Allied and Japanese soldiers who were more technologically advanced and thought the soldiers were gods who had many "cargo" (canned food, electronics, modern stuff)
