The Tea Party Patriots of Forsyth County are sure fans of Dinesh these days, and also have very interesting thoughts about contemporary politics.
Wonder which side of that 1987 dispute in Forsyth County these folks would have taken, John Lewis's or David Duke's?
Also worth remembering that David Duke's high profile racism didn't banish him from public life, but rather catapulted him into GOP stardom. He got almost 700,000 votes for LA Governor in 1991. He was a precursor of the Trumpian GOP to come. thebaffler.com/salvos/the-yea…

A useful list of just a few of the mortifying things our cotton candy headed President has said or done that would have been major scandals for any President in recent memory, but weren't, because their supporters weren't regularly anaesthetist by Fox and Facebook.

Bill Buckley once said he'd "rather be governed by the first 2000 names in the Boston telephone directory than the Harvard faculty." Just in case it seemed odd to you that the US conservative tradition could produce an anti-intellectual goon like Trump.
Not stanning for governance by the Harvard faculty here...just pointing out that many of the great conservative defenders of "Western Civilization" have also been fake populists and demagogic anti-intellectuals.
And also, I recognize that Trump himself is not a product of the conservative tradition. He's just a self-seeking grifter. But it's the nation's conservative voters and institutions that got him elected and sustain his power despite his clear unsuitability for office.

Today would be a good day to join the Labour party. Not in a bid to control its political direction, but as a democratic imperative.
The last few years have shown what happens when the opposition ceases to function. Now we have to live with the consequences. This can't be allowed to go on.
I can't do it myself. I find it icky when political journalists are party members, even in this kind of tactical capacity. But if I wasn't a political journalist, that's what I'd be doing today.

Today the @USDOL proposed a new rule aimed at undermining our civil rights laws in the name of religion ⤵️
The new rule is only the latest Trump administration proposal to license discrimination in the name of religion to harm:
➖ LGBTQ people
➖ people from minority faith groups
➖ all women
➖ people of color
➖ immigrants
In January 2018, @HHSgov created the "Conscience and Religious Freedom Division," led by people who have built their careers attacking LGBTQ and reproductive rights.

1. When the actions of our government spark mass protest it is a sign that the democratic process is unwell - that the government is operating well-outside the mainstream. Historically, the reasons differ.
2. Usually, it is because the government is resisting change that is wanted by the majority of the country - as with the Suffrage and Civil Rights movements. It can also be due to a disagreement of the majority with policy - as with the Vietnam War.
3. The mass protests witnessed since 2016 are a bit different. We have seen a majority party not just resisting progress, but wishing to dial it back - fully aware it is against the wishes of the majority of the population.

.Every day in twitterverse I watch straight young white people who identify as "progressive" demean and diminish the lives of the marginalized & insist that WE need to recognize that "economic security" is the #1 issue all liberals need to focus on which will then solve all. (1)
.I watch them speak from their lofty privilege not realizing that they are standing on a platform built by the very people they demean. Their lack of gratitude for the work of these before them blows my mind. Their robotic devotion to an establishment man with minimal (2)
