Just saw "Rise of Skywalker." Everyone is wrong. The movie is mostly nostalgia-packed joy. If you love the original "Star Wars," you should be grateful to JJ Abrams for attempting to right his own wrongs in "Force Awakens" and the travesty that is "Last Jedi."

Mild spoilers coming.

Finn and Poe remain boring and irrelevant. But Kylo Ren is given an actual arc, and Rey's reveal is pretty great -- and answers the key "Mary Sue" question about her. The nasty endings for Han and Luke are bought back, and Leia is given some great backstory and a solid ending.

Basically, if you were pissed at what they did in "Force Awakens" and "Last Jedi" to all your favorite childhood characters, they tried to undo it in "Rise of Skywalker." And that is great.

That doesn't mean the new trilogy was necessary. It wasn't. But it exists, and this was as good way to end it as was possible given the brutal screw-ups of the first two films.

They still should have just fast-forwarded the "Star Wars" universe and started fresh, or relaunched in a different area of the galaxy (aka "The Mandalorian") or recast the series and picked up where ROTJ left off with the Admiral Thrawn narrative. But they didn't.

So here's what I'm saying: I hated "Force Awakens." I hated "Last Jedi." I enjoyed "Rise of Skywalker," because it was an apology for all of that.

As far as the critique that Luke and Vader became irrelevant in this trilogy, that's true. But that was true as soon as TFA came out. The republic failed, the First Order rose, Luke became a recluse, and the main takeaway from Vader was that Ben Solo modeled Kylo Ren on him.

So, here are the updated rankings:
