It’s hard to explain what this week feels like for many of us working on #ClimateChange, particularly in #Australia, but I’ll try in this thread.

Firstly though, a link to some practical things you can do to help those directly impacted right now.

Secondly, I can’t imagine what this is like for Indigenous Peoples of Australia - the #FireCrisis is largely due to colonizers f&$king it up on several scales. Broadly, as a function of climate change & specifically, not recognizing/following Indigenous land management practices
Thirdly, a shout out to the many #Climate scientists feeling pretty horrible at the moment. It’s frustrating that we *knew* something like would happen, just like we *knew* the Great Barrier Reef would bleach like it did in 2016 & 2017, & yet the world didn’t act.
Forthly, I’m so sad to know this is just the beginning. We are in for more #ExtremeEvents, here & around the world, & even though Australia will be badly impacted we will still be the (comparatively) ‘lucky’ country as we are wealthier than many other places in the firing line
5th, yes mitigation & adaptation will be costly, but is achievable & when we talk about ‘cost’ can we PLEASE factor in the cost of NOT acting, which is much much greater.

Eg: Transitioning to renewables wld create many jobs & pay for itself in only 7 yrs

6th it’s crappy seeing/receiving #ClimateDenier comments, particularly people with (in theory) capacity/skills to assess info & info sources. People should ask questions, sure, but pls understand that scientists do what we do bc we are curious about our world, & care, not for $
IPCC has recently released 3 comprehensive reports, collectively assessing >20,000 peer reviewed science papers & addressing >100,000 questions via several rounds of review (slide with deets below, adapted from one of my public talks).

The science is in, can we act like it pls?
We have 2 options, 1/ descend (further) into them vs us selfish thinking or 2/ get our shit together & work towards the *possible* productive sustainable future -within our grasp - if only we chose to go there.

We *have* most of the tech we need already
Sometimes it feels pretty hopeless BUT I want to be able to look the next generation, my kids in particular, in the eye, & say I did the best I could with what I had.

So, who’s gonna help kick #ClimateChange in the butt in 2020?
