These are from The Impeachers by Brenda Wineapple, on the Johnson impeachment. I'd heard it was quite good, but I'm surprised by how much of a *page-turner* it is.

Once news broke that President Johnson defied an act of Congress to fire the Secretary of War, Thad Stevens insisted — You were cautious on impeaching him before, and look what happened! He was only emboldened!
Later, those most morally outraged by Johnson were upset that most of the articles of impeachment were so narrow and limited.

But that was viewed as what was necessary to win over the moderates.
