Without a touch of irony, Trump just tweeted: "THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY"
And what, for Trump, is the crime of the century?
The evil plot to bring him down!
Trump is forcing the GOP Senators . . .
1/
Alternate reality: The crime wasn't the "Russian government interfering in our elections in a sweeping and systematic fashion," which, for Trump was a "hoax."
The crime wasn't Operation Ukraine Shakedown . . .
2/
This, folks, is totalitarianism:
💠The leader says up is down
💠Everyone must agree
A totalitarian leader requires the people to ignore facts.
3/
Trump's defense is that what he did was perfect and the "criminals" are those testifying against him.
Dear @senatemajldr, @MittRomney, and other @GOP Senators.
What will you do?
End/
💠The GOP Senators close ranks around Trump (raising the question: Will they adopt his alternate reality?)
💠Or something else
Whatever the GOP does now—whichever option they adopt—it's all about Nov. 2020.
We still have meaningful elections (Um, 2018 and 2019)

I started with the assumption that they care more about power than truth.
Starting from that assumption, Trump is making it very hard for them.
It's one thing to wink-wink and justify and cover up.
It's another to say, "Up is Down."
The best way to understand the thinking of the reactionaries who have seized control of the Republican Party is to read Hofstadter's classic work, The Paranoid Style in American Politics . . .
He called their behavior the “paranoid style” in politics. . .
According to Hofstadter, the “something larger” to which they belong is generally phrased as “the American way of life.”
They are “determined to repossess it and prevent the final act of subversion.”
They therefore adopt extreme measures.
Others are cowardly conservatives. Yes, they're afraid of losing their jobs. I'm sure they have fears as well.
