Trump isn't operating according to some highly-calculated, informed strategy. He's flailing. He's not up to the job. Pretending he's even competent in the loosest sense of the word gifts him undeserved and irresponsible credibility.
With Iran, everything he's done has simply been an attempt to unravel Obama's achievements. He doesn't understand the situation.

With North Korea, he communicated based on shared values of insecure authoritarianism.

That's it. That's what happened.
These stories "analyzing" Trump's moves are just beyond ridiculous and are more about the writers and establishment figures attempting to project their own capability on Trump in order to keep their own system humming along.
The truth is our system is broken. It's been broken for a long time. A system that worked would never had gotten Trump. He was elected BECAUSE he is incompetent and incapable. And the people who should recognize that are terrified to admit they're beneficiaries of a broken system
The pundits who spend all day praising his "instincts" and his "secret competence" are beyond horrified that an incompetent buffoon won in a system where they have won.

It troubles the meritocracy and it threatens their very identities.
It's a sad state of affairs, because the punditry and media class are as wrapped up with Trump and their own identities as the rabid Trumpists. They need him to be competent or else their entire narratives about themselves are suspect.

The projection is just beyond tragic.
