1/n) Thread on India US relations in context of China.
2/n) India's deepening of its ties with US has been due to a result of the Great power competiton that USA faces from China.
3/n) I beleive that India's proximity with USA is INVERSLY PROPOTIONAL to the threat perception that USA faces from China.
4/n) In the (unlikely) scenario that if in coming decades, if the Chinese threat dissipates then USA will drift apart from India.
5/n) Many have assumed that current US-India bonhomie will continue to last forever in the future (irrespective of what happens to China & other factors). This is a view that I dont subscribe to.
6/n) As Indian power rises over the next few decades there could be a possibility of Indian and US interests diverging plus lack of common threats.
7/n) Indian and US would possibly rub against each other causing friction in the relationship that has grown significantly over the last 20 odd years.
8/n) India's heft at that point (still relatively dwarfed by US even then) would make it more emboldened to take FP steps which are completely independent of outside influences including from DC causing consternation in the US that their strategic partner is not beholden to them.
9/n) Then in future we would see more vocal criticism from US Govt. that is absent today due to the nature of the relationship. That would reminiscent of the 90's (during Kashmir & Pokhran-2) when there was consistently harsh admonishments from the West including US.
10/n) India has to purse an independent FP which helps achieve its strategic goals while keeping in mind:
1) that US bonhomie might not last forever
2) learn to do things irrespective of pressure from foreign capitals (similar to 90's and even now)
