Now that "Genotype AA" is trending, now is a time to remind you to check your genotype if you haven't.

While pairing, remember this:

AA + AA = ✅
AA + AS = ✅
AA + SS = ✅
AA + AC = ✅
AS + AS = ❌
AS + SS = ❌
AS + AC = ❌
AC + SS = ❌
SS + SS = ❌
SC + AS = ❌

About 5–7% of the people in the world has an abnormal Hb gene. One abnormal form is the Sickle Cell gene

The greatest burden of the disease is in sub-Saharan Africa and Nigeria has the highest rate in Sub Saharan Africa

Nigeria can well have the highest number of people with SS

For those asking, the hemoglobin C gene is also an abnormal gene, just like the S gene

If a person inherits this gene from both parents that person will have Hemoglobin C disease

If the person inherits it from only one parent then the person has the Hemoglobin C trait(AC)

Sometimes it happens also one parent has the S gene, and the other has the C gene, the baby might inherit both and have the sickle cell Hemoglobin C disease (SC)

This disease has similar symptoms similar to sickle cell anemia or Hemoglobin C disease,also said to be less severe
