All this said I'm always happy to see a Republican break ranks and speak the plain truth about what is plainly true to anyone with eyes to see it.

It's just that I've seen this happen before. I've rarely seen it translate into the actual vote.

So I'm watching and waiting.

This is the greatest danger.

Trump was the battering ram, showing people of evil intent exactly what will be permitted.

Authoritarianism isn't going anywhere after Trump unless as a nation we resolve to become rigidly anti-authoritarian, and to change our systems accordingly.
I don't know if anybody needs to hear this, but this isn't "the big question."

You don't need to get everybody on board before you decide to oppose authoritarianism.

And if you have 66% support then you have a landslide that no candidate has seen in 40 years.
But more than that, you should determine to oppose authoritarianism even if 90% of people weren't on board. Even if 99% weren't.

You don't need a majority to determine to do the right thing. If you do, then you're not actually interested in doing the right thing.

My answer for her would be this question:

"We know in our history's past, there have been people who felt very strongly that it was morally imperative to keep certain people out of certain bathrooms, based on who they were. Which of these people most inspires you?"
Again, I think we should challenge bigots on the level they can't escape through bad faith, which is the level of story.

Story exposes.

Particularly useful question to ask people—like evangelical Christians, say—who have a rich tradition of stories from which to draw.

Just ask them to locate themselves in their stories, and ask them for their favorites.

The fact that this $1 billion deposit seems to be a product of Trump’s fevered mind aside, this is so repugnant, so morally vacant, it’s hard to imagine where to begin.
At the very least in the spirit of transparency, the Trump administration should publish a rate card showing the price we expect for the use of the US military, so we can calculate how much we’re getting for each death, each mutilation, each moment, each case of emotional damage.
Fathomless moral vacancy. No bottom to it. A hollow man leading a nation into a dwindling future.

THREAD: there is no one way to be a writer, no one way to tell a story, no one way to do this thing we do as a hobby or as a job or as an art form. Some write a little every day, in an office; some write a lot at one time at varying, sporadic points. It's all okay.
I think it's important to challenge all pieces of "Known Writing Advice," all those chestnuts of Vital Lore, and to see what they are and what works for you. We all have our own weird fingerprints to imprint upon this thing we do.
I think it IS important to talk about the things you do and the processes you use to write and tell a story and to hold them up and examine them -- share them with others, and listen to their ways of doing things, too.
