That small explosion was probably the 15 kg continuous rod warhead that blew out a circular pattern of hypersonic steel balls that riddled the fuselage, punctured the fuel cells and smashed the engine. The pilot tried the superhuman before the blaze hit the main tanks.
Had he made it back they'd have to enlist Captain Sully to give him an award.
