Okay. Probably a long thread here. Sorry. But here’s the full story from last night. I was on my way home and stopped at a gas station to get gas. The station (which I’m not gonna say exact) has been a regular stop for years, and is in a highly traveled north side location. Over
the years, I’ve come to know a guy that is often at this station- or a few others. He’s a nice guy who, a few years ago, lost his family and home to a house fire on Allisonville. It, understandably, sent him in to a life tailspin, and he’s been down on his luck. I know of the
house, and his story is true. So- when I see him we chat and I usually buy him some food or soda. He likes pretzels. As I was pulling in, I saw someone standing at the door of the gas station, and assumed it was my buddy. So I pulled into the front of the store to get out & chat.
see if he needed some pretzels or a drink. (he’s never asked me for money. He’s usually hungry). As I pulled up, I realized I was in the handicapped spot (it was rainy- I wasnt paying attention to the blue parking lines). I looked up at the handicapped sign to confirm, and then
noticed- the person at the door was not my guy- it was someone with an oxygen mask on holding a gun- which he pointed at me right through my windshield. I realized what was happening and glanced quickly enough to see the inside clerk being robbed. Stuff like that kinda makes
everything zoom out to a 3rd person viewpoint, but I threw into into reverse, whipped around, and pulled out of there, fast as hell. In doing so,my phone fell below my passenger seat. Less than ideal. I drove around the corner, pulled over to get my phone and called 911.
Eventually, she informed me police were in scene (the perpetrators were not apprehended). I felt really bad for the clerk, who was not harmed but is just a guy workin’ overnights at a gas station. And, you know what? And this will get blow back-I feltbad for the robbers, as well.
I mean- what has to happen in your life to put it in jeopardy for a couple hundred (at best) bucks? In the end, I’m glad no one was hurt, and am well aware my nocturnal lifestyle increases my risk for such bizarre sh*t to happen. It’s not my place to assume or lecture folks
on what the proper protocol is in that situation. I reacted instinctively- and learned it sucks to drive quickly with your head lowered beloe the dash. I’m jusy glad no one was hurt.
And I’ll still buy my man his pretzels every time.
