AMAZING. Paper does deep analysis to understand the decline in jail since bail reform. They believed the hype. Expected some “mass exodus” of “dangerous criminals.” But found it was really that those charged w/ lowlevel offenses weren’t being sent anymore.syracuse.com/crime/2020/01/…
The best part is the reporter realizing that those who no longer can be jailed werent jailed under the old system either. “Half of inmates were held only 1-3 days before release. Those accused of crimes have long been free. Now, they simply avoid being jailed in the first place.”
Reporter even gets the Onondaga DA to admit: “That Onondaga County rarely jails a suspect long-term for the types of crimes that form that major target of bail reform.”

Right. *Weve know that. So what is this DA & others doing fearmongering then?
The reporter notes that under bail reform, those charged w/ violent crimes can still have bail set. “Another reason there hasn’t been a mass release of criminals is that felony court judges are still allowed to set bail on many of the worst-of-the-worst cases.” Yup. We know!
Reporter does acknowledge there have been “controversies” thanks to pro-carceral forces cherry picking cases to weaponize. But good on reporter for calling it: “From statistical point of view, those only represent a small fraction who never go to jail now because of bail reform.”
So recap of NY bail reform.

Less people are in jail.
Those not in jail previously only jailed at most for days anyway.
Those charged w/ violent felonies still jailed.

So basically status quo. Except:

Less family separation.
Taxpayer $$ saved.
Jobs/housing kept.

NY: Breathe.
