New AG opinion in cases of @privacyint and others concludes that UK, French and Belgian laws on data retention of communications are at least partly in breach of EU law
If the CJEU judges agree with the Advocate General's opinion that the UK is in breach of EU data protection law, it is likely to impact upon whether the Commission can/will adopt a post Brexit adequacy decision for the UK.

1/ This vote by the Commons last night is being interpreted by some to mean that EU citizens will definitely have *no* appeal rights in relation to immigration status after Brexit. This is not correct.
2/ The withdrawal agreement bill still gives the government the power to adopt secondary legislation setting out appeal rights. So it's not true to say "the Commons voted to say that no one will be able to appeal".
3/ Here's the minister's rationale for opposing the amendment: needs more detail than the amendment would provide, claims it might have undesirable consequences. But not objecting to very existence of *any* appeal rights. Indeed minister says EU citizens *will* be able to appeal.

In the single market, the states options for responding to EU migration are mostly determined by policies that *aren’t about migration* - workers protection, social security, national databases. 2/
It’s easy for Germany to have a system for registering non-German migrants who stay for longer than 3 months. Because Germany has a compulsory residence register for all the *German* citizens. And compulsory ID cards. 3/

UCC had opportunity to comment on the #Data.Protection & Privacy Bill. The enactment of this law is long overdue. A comprehensive law on the collection & processing personal information gives effect to the right to Privacy envisaged under Article 27(2) of the Constitution
UCC welcome the protections offered by the Bill in terms of export of data, breach notification requirements, data subjects access rights, automated decision making, compensation and the right to be forgotten and provision for financial and penal sanctions for breach of the law.
Distinction between Data collectors & data controllers.
The Bill should however clarify & distinguish Data Collectors, from Data Processors & Data Controllers. Clause 2 is inconsistent with international good practice which provides for two broad categories of Data Controllers
