The entitlement mentality fostered by socialism is incredibly dangerous because it teaches people that everything they lack was "stolen" from them, so they are justified in seeking revenge against the "thieves."
For example, take the current left-wing mania for the "housing is a human right" talking point, which was used as an absurd example of the entitlement mentality run amok not long ago, but is now taken seriously in a push to nationalize loans and maybe construction.
If people are fed this garbage long enough, they will begin believing their housing woes are due to greedy thieves stealing the homes and financing they are "entitled" to. They will also blame others for the poor condition of any housing they get.
These feelings of resentment and anger are stoked by opportunistic left-wing politicians. Like any other resource, political or economic, resentment follows the law of diminishing returns, so they'll squeeze harder to get more of it to keep increasing their power.
This is exceptionally dangerous in a large country that has serious ethnic, cultural, and geographic divisions. The resentment fostered by entitlement politics becomes a book of matches tossed into a powder keg. It gives people more reasons to hate each other.
The resentment flows in both directions, as the people who are attacked as "greedy" for "depriving" the entitled of their just rewards are naturally offended by the accusation, and wise to be nervous about what will happen if they don't vigorously respond.
If you want to see what a concentrated blast of focused resentment can do to society, let Democrats pull off one of their lunatic schemes to waive student loan debt, thereby making chumps out of everyone who paid their loans.
This divisiveness is a feature, not a bug. Totalitarian leftists NEED vicious divisions in society, as many as they can get. They want to create more fault lines, especially in groups that currently look too homogeneous to them - like, say, white suburbanites with student debt.
The effect of entitlement and resentment is always most devastating for those trying to climb up from the lowest rungs of the income ladder, because various forms of cooperation are the only way to do that - getting a good job, starting a business, developing family assets.
All of those things involve cooperating with other people, which becomes harder to do when you're steeped in resentment, and ESPECIALLY hard when you specifically resent the people who would be most likely to hire you, become your customers, or invest in your ventures.
As the level of compulsion increases in society, voluntary cooperation naturally decreases - another way of saying the private sector gets smaller as government increases. Cooperation is harder and riskier than demanding "entitlements" and empowering politicians to deliver them.
The soft salesmen for socialism promise that entitlement money falls magically from the sky, or can be taken from a few ultra-rich people who will never miss it. Once people are hooked on the socialism drug, the hardliners step forward and begin confiscating middle class wealth.
That's why this game always ends with violent warfare. The hard Left knows it, and works for years to ensure their armies will be bigger and more comfortable with violence and intimidation. It's why they work so hard to weaken and subjugate the middle class, their true enemy.
Play the game in a huge country with deep social divisions, a weak and self-loathing common culture, decrepit inner cities, an economy already distorted by decades of political meddling, and a crushing debt burden and it will turn ugly very quickly on a massive scale. /end
