A new SARS-like #coronavirus is spreading rapidly in Asia
& the first case just popped up in the US.

The 30-something Washington state resident fell sick with pneumonia after returning to Seattle from Wuhan, China— the outbreak epicenter — Jan. 15. 1/

By January 19, the man reached out to health care providers to report his symptoms and travel history. They suspected 2019-nCoV and confirmed it within 2 days.

That is fast. 2/
The man is in good condition, in isolation at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington.

Officials are now doing contact tracing to figure out if he infected anybody else. 3/
“The appearance of an infected person in the US means this disease is on the cusp of becoming a pandemic, just like SARS in 2003,” @PeterDaszak told me.

The news comes just as WHO confirmed human to human transmission of virus is happening — and it may be happening easily. 4/
@PeterDaszak There's so much we don't know about the virus: how it transmits, where it came from, how dangerous and deadly it is...

But fact that cases already turned up in six countries, including US, means this outbreak is already likely larger than the some 300 cases China reports. /5
