Why did we "wait this long" before revealing that Jeff Bezos's phone was hacked? After all we knew many months ago. And why the UN? Here's why:
When you have such a serious allegation against a head of state such as MBS, where do you go for justice? We had a few choices: the media, Congress, the FBI...
If we give the results of our investigations to the media, then it's here today and gone tomorrow, given how the news cycle is. If we give it to Congress, it'll descend into political farce given the partisanship in US politics...
And if it goes to the FBI (which actually did happen), then we have no guarantee of independence given who runs the Justice Department (and the US administration); we're in the age of Trump after all

A note about coverage of Saudi Arabia (really, dictatorships in general). Such regimes are extremely opaque, but sometimes, as in the case of MBS's, are very newsworthy. This could prompt some journalists who are seeking scoops into a uncomfortable position...
I've seen some journalists in the past fall into a faustian bargain, where they convince regime officials that they're "sympathetic" in order to get access to news and scoops. This is a road that doesn't have a good destination.
If you compromise your integrity as a journalist in order to get "access" to scoops and news from a dictatorship, then you're really not a journalist anymore but a propagandist. Also, all they'll feed you is lies. Good luck with that.

2. Impeachment moves claims against a president into a venue where they can be fairly adjudicated—the evidence publicly presented and weighed. Two sitting Vice Presidents *asked* for impeachment inquiries against them to be convened, for precisely this reason.
3. Under Department of Justice guidelines, a president cannot be indicted. This, Mueller argues, means that a criminal allegation can produce a deeply unfair situation: It "affords no such adversarial opportunity for public name-clearing before an impartial adjudicator."
