A note about coverage of Saudi Arabia (really, dictatorships in general). Such regimes are extremely opaque, but sometimes, as in the case of MBS's, are very newsworthy. This could prompt some journalists who are seeking scoops into a uncomfortable position...
I've seen some journalists in the past fall into a faustian bargain, where they convince regime officials that they're "sympathetic" in order to get access to news and scoops. This is a road that doesn't have a good destination.
If you compromise your integrity as a journalist in order to get "access" to scoops and news from a dictatorship, then you're really not a journalist anymore but a propagandist. Also, all they'll feed you is lies. Good luck with that.

Time for another stream-of-consciousness thread that feels right now as random thoughts but I think will coalesce into something as I go on
"If your cause is moral, and your opponent is evil, and you can demonstrate that clearly to the world, then you will win". This is a huge lie. A comforting lie, but a huge lie.
I don't want to throw a wrench into the global human rights machinery (although that machinery doesn't work anyway). I don't want to ruin it for the many great human rights activists out there. But giving up on what doesn't work is an important first step towards a solution.

If you're not advocating radical solutions then you don't understand the depth of the problems
"Moderates" are more of an enemy than the actual enemies. At least the enemies are hysterical enough that they're helping uncover the true face of the system. Moderates want to cover up that face, and so allow a system of unbelievable cruelty to survive longer.
Radical solutions require a radical belief in your own dignity. Those "centrists" or "moderates", whatever they call themselves, want you to accept to be treated as half a human because it's better than to be treated as a non human. They'll tell you to be "rational" about it.

Dictators are victims too. Dictatorship creates damaged human beings on either side of an oppressive system. We must seek to end dictatorship as a system rather than fight dictators as persons.
I *know*, from the experience of talking to a lot of my sisters and brothers, that few can connect with this idea, because there's a lot of rage and injustice. But believe me, we won't make progress until we deeply understand it.
And this is why I say that if I meet MBS (the guy who tortured and killed my friends, and wants me dead) I will not give him a punch. I'll give him a hug.
