A local GOP official said my son was killed in a "drug deal gone bad." He later said Jordan was murdered by one of his "thug friends."

Losing a child NEVER gets any easier. My son was shot & killed simply for playing his music.

Our movie theaters, gas stations, parks, malls, & schools must be safe for our families.

After the murder of my son, I stood up to change the laws that failed my family.
Ever since I stood up and spoke out, I have been attacked relentlessly.

The new president of the NRA said I only won in 2018 because I’m a “minority woman.” Donald Trump Jr. attacked my character. And the National GOP harassed my elderly mother in law.

Today is an especially hard time for my family. In 2012 on Black Friday, my son Jordan was shot and killed.

I always spend this time of the year in deep reflection. I think about my son, my faith, and my family.

I recall my statement on the stand to my son's killer:

“There will be no graduation, daughter-in-law, or future generation for us. I too must be willing to forgive, and so I choose to forgive you for taking my son’s life. I pray that God has mercy on your soul.”
As each Black Friday goes by, I deeply mourn Jordan’s death.

But I take time to reflect on the process we have made.

Today marks seven years after my son, Jordan, was shot for playing his music.

This is always the hardest day of the year for me. So this year, I want to share a letter I wrote to my son.

Dear Jordan:

Seven years ago today, it was Black Friday in 2012. I was relaxing with our family at home after Thanksgiving.

That afternoon, you were headed to the mall to buy presents for your friends.

You and your friends were at a gas station, putting gas into your car.

Without warning, a man confronted you and opened fire. He shot 10 rounds into the car, and sped away.

I didn’t get to hug and kiss you goodbye. You were 17 years old. My heart is still broken.

It breaks my heart how simply having a lawyer and being in a higher social class dramatically changes how the justice system treats you.

I try to help but I feel broken each time I have to tell yet another young person the very basic rule of not talking to police.
I've seen this inequality first hand. I remember being in elementary and seeing a kid - and family friend - from my neighbourhood busted for cannabis charges.

He made the mistake of talking to the cops and his family was initially unable to afford a lawyer.
Legal aid wasn't much help either. So the family put whatever money they had to ensure he could at least have a chance.

It didn't help. His entire life, and entire family had their lives changed. Seeing this made me realize how some postal codes make it easier to catch a charge.

2. Particularly, I want to draw your attention to this statement from Paul Ryan. Basically, he’s pointing out that because Lamb didn’t have a primary opponent, he was able to run as a more conservative Dem which allowed him to win a district DT won by 20 pts.
3. Let’s unpack that a little. Two things are implied here. One, they know that GOP (and their support of DT) is frowned on enough that there is willingness to vote Dem in red districts with palatable messaging (moderate, willingness to work in a bipartisan manner).
