I updated our annual chart on the direct-to-consumer DNA testing market. Data (which is pretty dodgy) indicates a massive slowdown in the rate of growth, from 100% a year to about 20%.

23andMe hasn't given a figure for their database size since July (10 million). Perhaps because it has not hit the next integer (11 million) yet.
Here is my calculation of the year over year growth rate of the main ancestry databases. Total people ever tested had been doubling each year. No longer

I've noticed that Twitter is a cesspool of fake information about the coronavirus.

Here is a run down of top conspiracy theories.
I should say I am willing to entertain that some of the conspiracy theories are true. Just hard to tell. The information flow is being twisted by anti-CCP accounts linked to Hong Kong protests.

During the SARS epidemic, "nosocomial" or hospital driven spread of the virus was a major contributor to the epidemic. Something like 77% of SARS cases in Toronto acquired in hospitals.

CNN raised the idea of a "super spreader" -- someone who infects many others.

It's also called the 20/80 rule: a small percentage of victims cause most transmission.

superspreading can have to do with context (airplane cabin) as well as individual biology (immune supression).

In advance of #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday I wanted to crowdsource #Privacy #Cybersecurity and other risks to consider before buying and doing a consumer DNA test kit.

If results show nasty surprises it can be hard to handle.

If data is compromised every close relation can be impacted.

Indeed, there are accurate and new findings in this manuscript. The problem is that the accurate findings are not new and the new findings are not accurate.

In a nutshell, the authors compared array results from the UK Biobank to sequencing results and could not replicate many rare positive calls. This led them to caution against DTC genomics that use arrays to test monogenic conditions with ultra rare alleles.
So what's the issue?

..it’s a lot worse than you think.
2. Forensic technology can now track DNA samples to you in ways you can’t possibly control. About 6 years ago, law enforcement began actively borrowing techniques utilized by genetic genealogy to identify unknown samples recovered from crime scenes.
3. The popularity of direct-to-consumer DNA tests (DTCs) has been disproportionately high among Northwest Europeans and while these samples remain “mostly” private within DTCs, a study published last November (and highlighted in the NYT) by Erlich et al. (2018) (n=600,000)
