Pretrial detention in NY decreased 72% in last 3 decades. Violent crime dropped 82% in same period.

Yet the new NYPD Police Chief, w/o statistical basis, citing suspect numbers, is out lying that he can already tell that 3 week old bail reform somehow correlates to more crime.
For years, Brooklyn’s district attorney, Eric Gonzalez, has been practicing what the bail law now requires: consenting to release for most people charged w/ misdemeanors & non-violent felonies. In the same period, the violent crime rate has plummeted.
“The real impact of bail reform is being felt in upstate NY, where 60% people in jail are charged w/ misdemeanors. Already, there have been major drops in people in jail in counties like Herkimer & Onondaga, with no upticks in crime.”
Seriously though. Why is the NYPD Chief so desperate to jail Black & Brown people?
