Today's John Bolton news shouldn't surprise anyone. If you understand someone's motivations, you can generally predict their actions. His book is his primary motivation. If it's a best seller, it's worth millions of dollars to him. His testimony is huge free advertising for him.
Bolton's book wasn't ready during last year's House impeachment hearings, so he punted. Now Bolton's book is ready, so he wants to testify. He leaked stuff today to try to pressure the Senate to call him. If that fails, the House will surely hold a hearing so Bolton can testify.
You don't have to like or trust Bolton, or wonder if he's grown a spine, etc. He's a Republican, so those are irrelevant concepts. Bolton was always going to do whatever he thought was in his selfish best interest. That just happens to apparently line up with our needs this once.
Why did Bolton send his book to the White House a month ago? For his own legal protection, he needs confirmation that nothing in his book is classified. WH was obviously going to stall. Now he can just publish it as-is, and he can say the WH had ample opportunity to flag things.
You can spend all day inventing nonsensical conspiracy theories about how Bolton is doing all of this to help Trump. That'll help feed your outrage against the right wing. But that would be a complete waste of time, because it doesn't fit the facts, logic, and motivation at hand.
Bolton's motivation is to make millions of dollars from his anti-Trump book. So his every move is about book sales. Testifying at just the right time will sell more books.

Bolton's not trying to create random mischief for fun. He wants his fucking money. It's as simple as that.
In hindsight, we see that we could have safely ignored everything John Bolton has ever said about testifying, and we could have simply looked at his primary motivation (marketing his book). It nearly always works this way when predicting what political figures will end up doing.
That said, John Bolton has not "grown a spine" or "decided to do the right thing." Irrelevant concepts. His testimony will be all about benefiting himself. He'll paint himself as a genius. He'll insult the left, to retain his far-right street cred. And yes, he'll destroy Trump.
Finally, here's what matters most: if the GOP Senate chooses not to have Bolton testify during the trial, the House can hold a special hearing and have him testify. GOP Senators know this, and they'll have to factor it in when they make their decision. They're totally boxed in.
In response to the replies: you don't have to buy his book. You don't have to care if it sells well or not. How is focusing on that going to help us take Trump down?

Evil monsters like Bolton only do the right thing when it benefits them. That's just how things work. So be it.
If Bolton helps us take Trump down, and it comes at the cost of a bastard like Bolton getting to top the book charts, who gives a damn? That's just what it takes for us to win. Do you want to whine, or do you want to win? The fate of the world is at stake. I want to win.
