No...This is not a haveli. But a 440 year old temple dedicated to Shri Krishna in Vrindavan

Constructed by Akbar's general Raja Man Singh

Aurangazeb destroyed its top 3-4 stories circa 1670

What remains now is just 3 stories of the red sandstone structure
The original deity is now in Jaipur, likely moved there during Aurangazeb's raid

So this is not a functioning temple

Given its antiquity (440 years is a big deal!), I think a restoration is in order!
The facade of this temple reminded me of the great Shri-Vaishnava shrine Thiruvellarai near Trichy

A similarly truncated structure

But though Thiruvellarai's facade is more pathetic than Govind-dev temple, it is a functioning shrine!

A few things -

1. I think it is common wisdom that Khariboli possibly predates Muslim rule. Amir Khusrao likely learned it from his immediate Indian surroundings

2. Just because Khariboli has traditional had an urban orientation need not make it less "Indic" / "Hindu"
And yes...

Maybe it is true that given Khariboli's pre-eminence in the Delhi region, it perhaps got persianlzed in its vocabulary to a greater extent than say Bhojpuri or Avadhi

But so what
What the North Indian Hindu elite attempted in the 19th century was an attempt to de-persianize Khariboli by borrowing more liberally from Sanskrit

I see that as an honorable attempt, not to be looked down upon

I've admired @vajrayudha11 's tweets on temples etc

But the ignorance here is great. Sanskrit is not the only "divine" language in India

Tamil Vaishnavites for long have regarded the "nAlAyira Divyaprabandham" as equivalent to Shruti in stature

Hence the term "Ubhaya Vedanta"
@vajrayudha11 Now the Nalayira Divyaprabandham is not merely "regional" bhakti literature!

You cannot equate it with say Dasa Kritis of medieval Karnataka

Or even the great work of say Tulsidas in late medieval Avadh

It has the stature akin to that of the Sanskrit Veda
And this stature is accorded by the Shri-Vaishnava brahminical community in Tamil Nadu (better known as Iyengars)

Not some sub-altern group

Many who accord this status to the Divya Prabandham are often themselves Sanskrit scholars!

I disagree with Sarvesh ji here

Sure. Outsiders may have seen it as different registers of same language. But I doubt if Indians ever regarded Prakrits as a register of "Sanskrit"

Also every Indo-Aryan tongue has a genealogical link to Sanskrit. Hindi does not stand out
We shouldn't push this view that having a popular Prakrit with lots and lots of Tatsama words is somehow akin to learning Sanskrit - I see that view pushed in sections of H-twitter

Sanskrit is a distinct language. Learn it separately. If you can't speak it, say you don't know it
The languages of Southern Europe today (be it Italian, Spanish, French) have a v v deep connection with Latin

They are suffused with Latin vocabulary

But that doesn't make them "Latin".

Here's the thread I promised to @lobonkha. I know long thread bores people thus I've chosen ten devI temples from the old quarters of kalikAtA. kalikAtA is kAlikA-kSetra thus there's no dearth of old sadhana-pITha which were later converted to temples. Let's begin,
1. Kalighat - Everyone has heard about this temple even if they have not visited it. It's a Shaktipeeth & a quite famous one. In ancient period this region was known as kAlikA-kSetra, the name kalikAtA originated there. Kalighat shrine has been mentioned in the sAstra's.
The right of toe of devI sAtI fell here. The current temple is mere 200 years old but there are repeated mentions of this shrine in the middle age Bengali literature. It's said to hv been existed in the ancient period & discovery of Gupta era coins here proves it.

It is said that Jinnah had requested Hashim Premji to migrate to #Pakistan after Partition but he chose to remain in India. Only that vegetable oil unit remains as a token presence of the family's group at Amalner though it has expanded phenomenally in the country and overseas.

Thus Jainism started to spread in this region

First pit-stop on my #ExploreUP journey, Bhitargaon in #Kanpurdehat. Amidst squalor, in a village seemingly over-run by a combo of buffaloes & pigs, stands what may be north India's oldest existing temple. This brick temple dedicated to Vishnu dates to Gupta period, 6th century.
#ExploreUP: Having read abt a Lodi-era tomb at #Kalpi, #Jalaun dist, I expected it to be in line with the octagonal Lodi-Sur era tombs elsewhere in India. It turned out to be quite different. Locals call it the Chaurasi (84) gumbad.
#ExploreUP: The tomb @ #Kalpi, was described as that of a 'Lodi Badshah'. Aware that of the three Lodi rulers, two buried in Delhi & third in #Panipat, was puzzled abt the Kalpi person. Turns out to be a brother of Ibrahim named Jalaluddin who propped himself as ruler for a while
