He was being paid hundreds of thousands by Communist China!

We also learn Boston University hired a Lieutenant in the People's Liberation Army & a member of the Chinese Communist Party, who was busy spying when not doing classwork in the Physics, Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering Department at Boston University.

And we also learn that a Chinese national Zaosong Zheng was sponsored by Harvard and working as a researcher at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He was caught at Logan Airport trying to smuggle biological material out of the country.

We also learn that the Harvard Professor was also the Executive Director of the Joint WUT-Harvard Nano Key Laboratory in Wuhan, China. This means Harvard was involved in this.
