This is a really strong disability plan. It isn't perfect--no plan has been--and it definitely has its quirks, but it's incredibly ambitious, and I'd definitely put it in the top 2. (1/4)
It's been really great to see a virtuous cycle this campaign with candidates essentially competing to have the best disability plan. Things no one would commit to 6 months ago are now standard. (2/4)
The scope of what counts as a "disability issue" has also really broadened. Plans are now naming us in their proposals on criminal justice, climate change, immigration, infrastructure, and more. We are being taken more and more seriously. (3/4)
And, point to Bernie--I'll always have a soft spot for any plan that considers high-speed rail a disability issue. :P (4/4)

At the #ASANgala, I ask people to remind me who they are because I don't recognize their faces. I twist and untwist and twist and untwist the beads around my wrist, and I rock back and forth in my seat through most of the program. (1/8)
I carry a script in 16 pt font anytime I have to speak into the microphone. My DSP is always at my side, reminding me to drink water or sit down or take a break, teasing me that I've already introduced him to the same person 4 years in a row so I don't need to do it a 5th. (2/8)
And no one bats an eye. No one calls me unprofessional. My colleagues all know that they won't see me for the rest of the week, because I won't be verbal (or awake) very often for the next few days. It's not a problem. (3/8)

@theAspergianCom It is okay, and normal, and good, to make mistakes. It is common and understandable to do activism that deeply empowers some and hurts others. But if you want to lead a movement, you need to recognize when you make mistakes, and you need to change what you do going forward. (3/6)

Why is the @BernieSanders #disability plan so good? Let's go over some of the highlights. Because trust me, I'd be a lot less openly enthused if this were a bad plan. (THREAD) 1/?
Let's start off with firsts: it acknowledges disability rights as civil rights off the bat. This might sound as a "duh", but in a world where disability is often seen as this tragic thing where we lack in voices, this is a BFD.
My favorite topic is mental health, coming from the perspective of being a self advocate with bipolar disorder who takes a crap load of pills to stay semi-tethered to reality. Here @BernieSanders acknowledges MH as a disability issue, and not as some separate tragedy...

Monday turned into an 18hr work day, so I haven't been on here. But I just deleted a tweet from Monday morning applauding @KamalaHarris on her MH plan after reading a long thread by @mattbc, who is a brilliant #disability rights attorney who has helped many disabled folks.

I almost never delete tweets, but after reading Matt's carefully deconstructed explanation of the problems with Harris's mental health plan, I was frankly appalled and could no longer support it nor applaud it. There is just too much dangerous about it that could be harmful.

Americans need mental health programs and therapists. What is not needed is more incarceration of mentally ill people in lieu of care. And having just done a massive investigation into this issue, I can tell you, this is what America is doing and it is shameful and awful.

Time to take some ownership of #disability organisations to ensure they do have disabled people at the top.

Here's a few thoughts:
1. ask your service provider if they have #disabled people on their board.
If they do have #disabled people on the board, do we make up half of the board?

If not, why not?

Three weeks ago I was abruptly informed that my internship would be ending early as a result of the "unpredictable nature" of my chronic illness/disability...

Even tho there is only one month left in the semester.
Even tho my clinical skills are consistently referred to as excellent.
Even tho I was the first social worker and first intern to present at Grand Rounds in my department and my recommendations are already being implemented.
But apparently my track record for pushing back against oppressive policies matters more than my skills. And my disability is an easy target.
