Forget where I read it, but the analysis that the Brexit cause of recovering self-identity was self-defeating is one of the few new insights I have read about the topic. In trying to recover a British identity, it has polarised us and caused one half to despise the other.
I doubt that this was the intention for many. But for some using Brexit as agitprop to propel them into the spotlight it was probably a foreseen consequence, collateral damage.
The morons thinking 'we've got our country back' without knowing what it was they wanted back, have actually lost half of it, and generated new enemies that see them with clearer sight than before.
My personal experience is idiosyncratic. My entire nuclear family has Euro citizenship rights through Greece and Ireland. We can all go if we want to. But the whole exercise feels like one in explaining why my profession is a waste of time. No-one cares or is listening.
Economist: 'But economics!'
Rest: 'It's not about economics!' / 'You're just grinding your economist groupthinking axe, the real answer is X'
Economist: 'OK let's just do the maths for fun, or give up.'
