Regular expressions are *incredibly* powerful work-saving tools. I know all the "Now you've got [1-9]{1,9} problems jokes (h/t @metafilter), but power nerds totally underestimate how much repetitive work other people are stuck with because they don't have regexpertise
8 years ago, I mooted that regexp should be in the curriculum, even for little kids:

It was precrime for welfare: when you applied for benefits, it would assign you a risk score based on secretive algorithmic judgments that amounted to digital racism with empirical facewash: if you lived in a poor/racialized neighborhood, you were risky
But "algorithms don't lie" - that's right, they don't. They reflect their training data very well! If you have a human system that practices discrimination and use its data to train an automated system, it, too, will practice discrimination
But "the people the system identified were guilty": You can only find crime where you look for it. If you only ever spy on brown and poor people, you will only ever find crime among brown and poor people.

@matthewstoller One of @thepublicdomain's grad students did a Master's thesis that examined the slow growth of Mass Route 128 companies compared to Silicon Valley tech companies and concluded that noncompetes were the dispostive factor.
@matthewstoller @thepublicdomain Her conclusion IIRC, was that California's prohibition on noncompetes meant that people who joined innovative, but dysfunctional, companies early weren't locked out of the field once their employer's dysfunction forced them out.
@matthewstoller @thepublicdomain The canonical example, of course, is Shockley Semiconductor, whose founder, William Shockley, won the Nobel Prize for inventing silicon transistors (this is why Silicon Valley is called Silicon Valley and not Gallium Arsenide Valley)

It's well understood that hedge fund managers underperform index funds but firmly believe they can beat the market.
By the same token, Big Tech is full of smart people who believe they can both predict and shape our behavior if only they could spy on us enough, despite all evidence to the contrary.
Like everyone who has devoted their lives to a delusion, they insist that success is in their grasp, if only they stay the course and double down on their failed strategy.

Today, I will try my hand at live tweeting insights from "A #Home of One's Own", a two-day #researchworkshop on socially & economically #marginalised women's experiences of and negotiations with #genderinequalities in #informalurbanhousing in India.
This workshop has been organised by #JadavpurUniversity (School of Women's Studies), #RabindraBharathiUniversity (Centre for Women's Studies) and #Parichiti, a women's organisation. All three are research partners on a #GCRF project funded by @GoldsmithsUoL.
Since Oct 2018, I have collaborated with Dr. Henrike Donner, who is leading it, to develop #researchcollaborations with #educational and #development organisations in India to implement a pilot study on #genderurbanhousing. This workshop marks the end of the first phase.

1/That a judicial matter w/a *cooperating* witness could be producing so much news - and very bad news for the President - reminds us how far fr over whole Mueller investigation is, and how much we/Congress still doesn't know. Effort to suppress information has been Olympian.
2/Extraordinary that Mueller ended w/so much still in motion, dozens of different investigations. Sure feels like Barr came in and just shut the whole thing down, lied to the public/Congress abt core findings and is now doing everything he can to prevent Congress from continuing.
3/So much of what Trump/Barr tried to establish has already been debunked. Clear Mueller intended hand off to Congress as investigation isn't finished; as arbiter of impeachment, Congress has clear role here; spying never occurred; Trump isn't innocent. nbcnews.com/politics/white…

Also, WRs aside. my close friends are MUCH better than me at all games. It's weird having co-workers, fb/twitter follows, telling me I'm good at games. I've NEVER actually felt that way mostly because of the individuals I surround myself with 1/x
I was never the best at the music games I played, I wasn't even the best DDR player at my own arcade. Even though I own a cab now, I'm certain @Dawgbowl @Real_Flashfire and many others would destroy me, and they would undoubtedly admit how out of practice they are. 2/x
@LockerRoomSac @Real_Flashfire are probably >95% win rate in literally any fighting game against me, even if I have vewlix cabs and fight sticks. @oobaazea doesn't even count because her ability on IIDX and popn are further ahead than I can even comprehend, let alone attain.

We have seen a rise in both care proceedings and private law cases - all have to be crammed into court lists of Judges stretched as far as they can be. Without more investment in the system we cannot cope with this continuing rise. #FCDebate
We have to decide what the social norms and standards should be in the society we create. Is the system the one we want? Why are there variations in care proceedings around the country? We cannot have a post code lottery. #FCDebate

Globalists stunning success in NZ and UK will encourage massive false flag events here in the US to accomplish the same goals: disarm Americans and ban free speech “to encourage healthy conversations”. Perpetual unchallenged power is their goal.
The powerful IC, with the tools given them in the wake of 9/11 were designed to pinpoint terror cells like one in NZ. FIVE EYES intelligence spying and sharing includes NZ. Are we supposed to believe they failed in their one core mission that justufied these tools to begin with?

Every day next few days I'll share one #depression/#anxiety insight from my own experience. If it helps anyone a wee bit, it'll be worth it.
1. "#Happiness" can scare #anxiety patients. In our heads, things are always going wrong. Fear of a "happy" moment undone is doubly painful.
