The _Time Mag_ article Rogin cites was part of the furor over the Church Committee's investigation of misbehavior by US security agencies. Kuznetsov is mentioned only once, in a list of Soviet embassy officials who tried to get info from Senate staffers. This was the 1/
era of James Jesus Angleton at the CIA, and it's quite likely both sides were seeking info. The _Time_ article's main point is that Frank Church ignored info about Russky spies. Anyone who's talked with CIA staff from those days knows such stories were widespread. Church, 2/
though still vilified in some circles, did a pretty sound job. 1976 was the year the second iteration of Committee on the Present Danger was formed, to lobby vs détente and SALT II, inflating data as it proceeded.
If democracy dies in darkness, the omissions in Rogin's 3/
3/
are part of the effort.
I am not a Bernie supporter. I do think readers need a fair account of all candidates. And I worry about reviving Committee on the Present Danger. As Stanley Hoffman said in 1979, its message was "coherent, dangerous, and wrong." 4/
