Very worrisome - we've never seen such an ambitious and coordinated effort to destroy confidence in the American information ecosystem. Many tactics are disturbingly reminiscent of those used in authoritarian countries.
In the @mckaycoppins piece, he notes that Republicans plan to attack the local news ecosystem as well, including using the fake local sites I wrote about in @UpshotNYT (nytimes.com/2019/10/31/ups…) to seed damaging articles about opposing candidates theatlantic.com/magazine/archi… 
@mckaycoppins @UpshotNYT However, warnings about the persuasive effects of microtargeting are overstated and the corrosive effects of misinfo exposure on trust in news that @mckaycoppins experienced have not been definitely established. We need to learn more quickly, though, given the plans in place.
@mckaycoppins @UpshotNYT Though not comparable in scope, I find this highly worrisome as well - dark money liberal group funding the production of favorable local "news" and then pushing it out via ads to voters. (Liberals would flip out if e.g. the Kochs were doing this.)
