Sanders is probably right that he could get a not-insignificant portion of Mitch McConnell's voters to support Medicare for All.

What he doesn't get is that even if he does, those voters will still vote for Mitch McConnell. So Mitch McConnell has no reason to give a shit.
All over America, Republicans in rural areas support all kinds of liberal ideas. In Missouri, for instance, GOP voters raised the minimum wage and killed right to work by referendum.

The problem is, even if they agree with Dems on those things, their cultural grievances win out.
This is the real tunnel vision behind how Sanders views the world.

Fixing class conflicts is his driving passion. Which is fine! But the problem is that he thinks all other conflicts derive from that struggle. And so he doesn't see what's the matter with Kansas (or Kentucky!)
