Republicans don't get that there is no one single fix to climate change.

I'm all for reforestation and carbon capture technology, but those aren't a free pass to keep using fossil fuels. And that's what Republicans are presenting this bill as. feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/Pol…
I do find it refreshing that Republicans now feel obligated to come up with their own climate policy plan. And I don't disagree with anything in their bill (other than maybe the natural gas subsidies).

What I have a problem with is how they're claiming it's all that's needed.
Yes, a comprehensive climate policy plan should involve reforestation and carbon capture. But it should ALSO involve efficiency standards, carbon pricing, urban density and mass transit incentives, retrofit mandates, geoengineering research and pilot programs. And a lot more.
The simple truth is, we did a million little things to get CO2 to 400ppm. And we'll have to do a million little things to get it back down.

This seems like a good time to remind everyone that there is still a literal domestic terrorist sitting in the Washington House of Representatives.
Also, about that "Three Percent" thing. That's a reference to a common claim among militiamen that "only 3%" of colonists fought against the British — therefore presumably their ragtag band of paranoid gun-humpers could theoretically take down the whole U.S. govt if necessary.
In fact that's not true. Historians actually estimate about 11% of the population served in either the Continental Army or the state militias — and a solid plurality of the public at large supported the revolution. observer.com/2017/07/soldie…

Here's the thing, @justinamash: I think that you are a true believer in reducing the debt out of a firm conviction that America should not spend beyond its means.

But most of your GOP colleagues, and the billionaires who have lobbied them to cut the debt, have an ulterior goal.
Their actual goal is not to make the U.S. fiscally responsible. Their goal is to enrich Wall Street by shrinking the market for Treasury bonds, so that the Social Security administration and other big holders of those bonds have to turn to private securities instead.
BUT, the rub is, that's only one way Wall Street can rent-seek. Another way is lobbying for massive tax cuts that free up corporate profits short term.

Even though that contradicts paying down the debt, it's a tool to the same end. So they don't care.

I've reported on major disasters for a few years now. I first show respect for those who lose their life. Secondly, I cover the political impacts.

Scott Morrison is the new Theresa May. The main victim of this will be Australia.
(2) Australia's natural state since time began is to burn every summer. That's historically how the environment regenerated in the harsh temperatures; by fertilizing the soil with the ashes of vegetation.

Humans have had little effect on this. #Science
(3) Everyone in Australia (should) know that bushfires are a major threat every year. If you choose to live among eucalyptus trees (that contain flammable gum), then don't come crying to me when you're told to evacuate or succumb to the flames.

However, I do weep for the dead.

I went to the meeting yesterday at which Sinead Lynch, head of Shell UK, spoke to a substantial audience of senior policymakers at the University of Cambridge. /THREAD
@CraigBennett3 of Friends of the Earth was also there and spoke calmly and eloquently about the failures of the fossil fuel industry, eg its total failure to make good on the promised silver bullet that was Carbon Capture and Storage.
Lynch's rationale for Shell's continuing investment in fossil fuels was the standard stuff about how 'fossil fuels are going to remain part of the energy mix for decades to come'. Not sure how linguists would categorise this case of prescription thinly disguised as description.

Putting a price on carbon.

The IPCC report on holding global warming to 1.5°C released Sunday calls for it. A share of the Nobel in Economics was awarded to William Nordhaus this week for championing it. It's arguably the most efficient and powerful climate policy available.
