@julie27716630 The thread will grow. More later. Face masks are a poor way to avoid getting such a virus but a good way to avoid spreading it if you have it. Mostly those face masks are manufactured in China and it takes time to ramp up production...
@julie27716630 ...especially just after Chinese New Year, and when internal supply chains are stressed by something like this. Using a hanky or tissue to cough or sneeze in, not wiping your eyes or nose with your fingers, washing your hands. Best defence you have...

OK. Been putting this off. Coronavirus and what I think you need to know. A thread thats going to just be a brain dump over an unspecified period of time. By me. A microbiologist. But not that kind of microbiologist. (1)
Firstly, its a virus. This is basic stuff and beneath many of you to need to be told, but it means its not a whole living thing on its own. To reproduce it needs to find a host, where it latches on to a cell, injects its own information, and makes more of itself (2)
...think of it as being a bit of genetic code wrapped in stuff. The stuff in this case is a protein mix that sticks up on the outside forming a sort of crown (or 'corona') when you look at it using an electron microscope. Hence, coronavirus. (3)

Short geology thread. So while walking (no, the bike didn't have a puncture, we were on holiday and didn't have bikes with us) along the shore near Weymouth we encountered these. Lots of them. And they seemed most odd...
A rock, you say? What's strange about that. Size, uniformity and location. See, now I've worked out what they are, where they are needs some explanation. It turns out they're septarian nodules, from the Kimmeridge Clay deposit. But they're entirely in the wrong place...
...now the Kimmeridge deposit kind of goes right across the country, from Dorset up to North Yorkshire, and you get outcrops of it in various places. It continues our into the North Sea and yes, it's indicative of where to drill for oil and gas... And it doesn't look like this

I mean from the headline onwards @OwenJones84 is speaking inflammatory nonsense. Firstly, there is no such thing as an 'ultra-remainer'. You aren't 'ultra' anything for favouring the status quo. Remain isn't extremism, in any sense. (2)
He then goes on to reiterate how great the NEC position is - they'll push for a general election (which doesn't help Remain), their own version of Brexit (Unicorns), and only then if that fails a general election - which comes when, precisely? Wasn't time. Isn't time. (3)

Later tonight the moon will be clearly visible and the usual debate on the size will start, some will claim it’s 2 days old and some 3 days old by mere looking at its size.
The moon will be about 32 hrs old tonight by sunset, it’s altitude will be about 16 degrees and it will set about 1hr 12mins after sunset in most locations in Nigeria. So technically 32hrs is 1.3 days, generally the crescent becomes visible after 20 hrs
It’s als worth mentioning that the verified world record for a naked eye sighting stands at 15 hrs and 32 mins by Steven O’Meara renowned visual astronomer in May 1990.

The moon was 5hrs 37mins old in Tumair Saudi Arabia when it was claimed that it was sighted by naked eye,

He travelled in KSRTC buses and covered 5 districts in 10 days without revealing identity. He took leave for serving his homeland in the time of crisis. Kannan is a native of Kottayam. Even his relatives were not aware of his unofficial visit! (2/n)
It was only after Eranakulam Collector Y.Safirulla's visit to centre at KBPS press, the volunteers of the camp came to know that the guy who was helping in loading goods was an IAS officer! (3/n)
